Company of Heroes 2 has been the source of much resentment in the Motherland. Those of you who have played through the game’s single-player campaign might have noticed that the Russian leadership isn’t exactly portrayed in the most positive or ethical light. While historically the Russians were a little, how should we put this, intense in their defence of their homeland, many Russian players are furious about what they believe is an exaggeratory representation in Company of Heroes 2.

In response to this growing backlash, Russian distributor 1C-SoftClub has made the decision to stop selling the game in the territories that they’re responsible for. This includes Russia and the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries such as Armenia, Belarus and Kazakhstan to name a few.

In a statement released on the distributor’s website, the company has said that they have contacted both Relic and Sega about the matter and are awaiting more information from them. Website Polygon has, however, obtained the following statement from Sega: “Sega and Relic are aware of the press stories circulating concerning Company of Heroes 2 and the historical context of the game from a Russian perspective. At this time we cannot offer any further comment, however we are taking this issue very seriously and are investigating these concerns thoroughly with all relevant partners.”
